Participation Criteria:

 Junior 4-H'ers must be 8-10 years old by September 1 of the current program year.  
 Intermediate 4-H'ers must be 11-13 years old by September 1 of the current program year.
 Senior 4-H'ers must be 13-18 years old by September 1 of the current program year.

Divisions for the Contest

Division 1: Print 
  • Class A - Color or Black and White Print - Single Print
  • Class B - Color or Black and White Print - Series (up to 10 photos in a series)

  Division 2: Digital 

  • Class A - Digital Photo - Single Image (minimal or no manipulation)
  • Class B - Digital Photo - Series of Images (up to 10 images in a series, minimal or no manipulation)
  • Class C - Creative Digital Photo - Single Image
  • Class D - Creative Digital Photo - Series of Images (up to 10 images in a series)

Entering Digital Photos

  • Digital photos should be entered in ONLY division 2. 
  • Entries in Division 2, classes A and B should have little or no electronic manipulation. 
  • Substantially altered digital images should be entered in Division 2 class C or D. 
  • All Division 2 entries should include a print and an electronic jpeg file of the image, formatted for a PC and placed on a CD, a diskette or a zip disk. 
  • Division 2 entries must fill out a statement on the certification form about electronic manipulation of the image.

Additional Guidelines

Only prints may be submitted for the exhibit.  All entries to be judged at the state competition must have the negative(s) attached. (see "Preparation of Negative").

Advantix photos should securely attach a copy of the index print and the film cartridge sufficing for the negative (NOTE:  The number on the index print should match the number on the film cartridge).  These should be entered in Division 1, Class A or B.

Youth’s name, age, county, division & class numbers must be clearly printed on the back of ALL submitted materials (photos, negatives, CDs, etc.) 

Photo entries may be either black/white or color when processed from negatives, a digital camera or slides.

A 4-Her may submit one entry as either:

1)  A series of photos: picture sequence or story showing a logical progression of images, or

2)  An individual photo

Pictures should depict activities typical of those in which 4-H members and their friends would likely participate.

All photos (single and series) must be mounted on a mat or foam core.  No other mounted material (i.e. glass, wood, plastic, metal, etc.) will be considered.  DO NOT SEND PHOTOS IN A GLASS OR PLEXIGLASS  (or any other coating)

Maximum size for a single photo is 8" X 10", not including mounting; 12” X 14” with mounting. Maximum size for the mounted series is 16" x 20".  

Fill out and securely attach the Florida 4-H Photography Exhibit Certification Statement form (see Appendix) to the back of the photo mount.  Refrain from writing on the photo.

Automatic Disqualification

  • Entry received after deadline.

  • Negatives not securely attached.

  • Digital photos without proper prints and disks securely attached.

  • Creative digital images (Division 2) without a statement about the electronic manipulation of the image.

  • Advantix photos without index prints and film cartridges securely attached.

  • Inappropriate size and/or mounted material.

  • Incomplete or illegible certification statements and/or not securely attached and visible without unfolding or removing from envelopes.

  • Name, age, county, division & class numbers not clearly printed on the backs of all submitted materials.

Participation Procedures

District:  Each County may exhibit up to 3 entries per class at district events.

State: 

  • The top 3 exhibits for each class from each county must be submitted to the State 4-H Public Relations Office no later than 4:30 pm on June 1 of the current program year to be eligible for judging and exhibition at Florida 4-H Congress.  

  • Previous year’s entries may not be resubmitted to the state contest.

Preparation of Negative
Negatives are required for entries in Division 1. Do not cut the individual negative and submit it alone. Negatives must be in a strip of at least three or four other negatives. Be sure to indicate which negative is your entry by carefully marking along the sprocket holes with indelible magic marker, or indicating in the plastic or paper sleeve with a pen. Also, indicate the frame number of this negative in the information listed on the Florida 4-H Photography Exhibit Certification Statement (ms-word  pdf file). 
 
NOTE: Please attach your negatives VERY CAREFULLY AND SECURELY to your photograph. 
Scoring
- Junior, Intermediate and Senior entries will be judged separately.  
-
Three top entries will be selected for each class.  
- Three senior division winners will be selected from among the winning class entries in each division.  
- The winning senior division entries will be displayed Florida 4-H Congress. 
- A placing may not be awarded if the judges do not feel a placing is merited by the entry.  All decisions by the judges are final. 

Awards
The top three senior scoring exhibits in each of the two divisions - Color or Black and White Print(s) and Digital will receive a trophy.  Top placing junior and intermediate exhibits will receive certificates.  Each photo exhibit at the district level will receive a participation certificate.  Senior winners will be displayed at State 4-H Congress.
