Professor
Clarence W. Reaves was a dedicated extension worker who celebrated the
successes of 4-H members. He became Extension dairyman in 1947 and was
responsible for providing leadership to all extension dairy programs in
Florida. His prior experience with dairy programs in Tennessee helped him
understand both the needs of the dairy industry and 4-H programs. He
coached the 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging team and accompanied them to the
national judging contest.
Reaves loved working with young people and was a big influence on
the lives of many 4-H’ers during his career.
He initiated the first District 4-H Dairy Shows and the State 4-H
Dairy Show, and by 1951 all 10 4-H districts were holding annual 4-H dairy
shows. He established the statewide judging contest in 1948. After his
retirement in 1971 he continued to donate his time to 4-H by attending all
the major dairy events in Florida. His
interest and dedication to the dairy cattle program led to the
establishment of the C.W. Reaves 4-H Dairy scholarship program. A plaque
is displayed in the UF Animal Sciences Department showing the recipients.
