"Luther" Harrell was a 4-H member since his upbringing on a farm
in Alachua County. A scholarship enabled him to fulfill his dream and
become an agricultural extension agent in Baker County and work with youth
in the 4-H program. His love for 4-H introduced him to thousands of young
people and in turn helped him introduce those young people to the positive
developmental aspects of 4-H. Never a shy speaker, Hamell took every
opportunity to invite everyone to become involved in and support 4-H
programs. Harrell said that being in 4-H allowed him the chance to go
college, to develop leadership skills, and as an adult 4-H gave him the
pleasure of sharing the benefits of being a member with many others. He
said he thinks that without 4-H in his life, he may not have achieved some
of his goals. He was a true educator who had a positive influence on
everyone he met. During his career 4-H programs grew and developed as a
result of his tireless efforts to make a positive impact on youth.Outside
of 4-H he was very active in his community, and he was a visitor and
friend to other cancer victims while battling it himself. Harrell was also
an anonymous donor to underprivileged school children and has inspired
others to follow in his footsteps.
