Hariot
Greene and her husband Barney have been generous financial contributors to
Florida 4-H at the state and local levels for many years. Green and her
husband invested in a treasure ship search that they thought would never
pay off, but when the Atocha’s treasure was found in 1985 they donated
their share of the “booty” to the Florida 4-H Foundation and to citrus
research. Besides sharing her resources with 4-H, Hariot Greene has also
donate her time to helping 4-H youth. She was a member of the Florida 4-H
Foundation Board from 1987 to 1994 and was treasurer from 1991 to 1993.
Although she prefers to stay in the background, her financial and
emotional support have made it possible for many 4-Hers to participate in
learning activities. She personally made contacts to find financial
support for 4-H youth to attend the University of Florida. The Greenes
also established a school on the island of Mindanao that teaches high
school students the fundamentals of agriculture so they can learn to
support themselves. Hariot
Greene said “My experience as a board member of the Florida 4-H
Foundation has been very rewarding and the friendships through this
involvement are very special. The most rewarding part has been in our
relationship with the young people involved in the 4-H program. To see
them grow and mature and become responsible citizens brings me great joy.
I have reaped far more than I have sown by my involvement in
4-H.”
