In 1942 Arthur Bissett was given
the task of starting 4-H programs in Polk County, and over the course of
27 years he led 4-H clubs and in-school programs throughout the county.
The youth participated in gardening, livestock and environmental
activities. Mr. Bissett pioneered 4-H programs in Polk County, and past
and future 4-Hers are indebted to his years of service. Bissett is also
known among agricultural producers in the county and he continues to use
his influence to help the 4-H program. He
is known for his role as a citrus producer and cattleman as well as his
hands-on approach to creating 4-H educational programming. The opportunity to pioneer 4-H programming in Polk
County meant a lot to him because as a young boy he participated in a
local program similar to 4-H because 4-H wasn't yet available in Polk
County. Bissett
personally worked with over 20 4-H clubs throughout Polk County during his
27 years of service. After school and on weekends he had a profound effect
on the lives of many people. His
involvement has also produced a number of successful young people through
their involvement with 4-H. “Youth
work is a part of me,” Mr. Bissett said.
