#1 - Message from Marilyn
Dear 4-H Faculty,
What a great start to
a new year! There are many
great educational activities and learning events scheduled as noted in
the many newsletters that are sent to us.
We have a lot of new things to integrate into our programs both
this year and next and I hope this transition is going well.
Be sure to send a
copy of your Plan of Work and Report of Accomplishment to us so that
we have a good idea of your successes.
The Focus Teams will be meeting in March to prepare the state
report so we’re looking forward to reading a lot of good success
stories and making sense of everything that you reported.
It is VERY important
that your volunteers and youth are informing decision-makers of the
positive qualities of your program and how important it is to support
the IFAS number one legislative priority.
This month and next are critical for individuals to show
support of 4-H and FCS programs. PLEASE
take this seriously and strongly encourage local phone calls and
visits. We are awaiting
the Governor’s budget to find out an exact line number in the
budget.
We will be at the
State Capitol twice in April. On
April 5th, many of us will join with UF as they celebrate
the
University
of
Florida
day in
Tallahassee
. There will be a limited
number of spaces for booths, displays, and youth participation in
outdoor activities, but there are still visits to be made, galleries
and committee meetings for observation, and local attractions.
On April 27th, we will sponsor 4-H Day with many
opportunities for booths, youth activities on the old capitol steps,
and many local attractions. Visits
to decision-makers should also be made that day.
Whether you choose April 5, or April 27, bring lots of
volunteers, parents, and youth; work closely with your FCS / CED
faculty to insure the involvement of many people in this effort.
Wear green and white and stand tall for IFAS Extension and 4-H.
Best wishes for a
great February!
Marilyn

- Know an
Exceptional 4-H Youth? Tell us about it!
We
all know why 4-H is special, but we need your help to tell everyone
out there who doesn't yet know! We're looking for stories about
exceptional youth who are making a difference through
4-H—outstanding leaders, unique activities and other stories that we
can develop to tell the story of 4-H Afterschool across the country.
For example, there’s a 4-H teen in Kentucky who raises money to
outfit police dogs with bulletproof vests and a 4-H youth who makes
blankets to send back to the orphanage in Russia she was adopted from.
Do you know of a story that’s
interesting, inspiring or unique? You don’t have to write it, just
call us and talk—we’ll do the rest. Repeat, you don’t have to
write it!
A
short conversation will go a long way towards promoting 4-H across the
country. It helps increase awareness of the good 4-H does for our
youth, and ensures continued funding for our programs. So please take
a minute, think about all the great things 4-H youth and programs do,
and TELL US! E-mail us at wow@fourhcouncil.edu
or call Gretchen at 301-961-2829.

- GIS SOFTWARE GRANTS FOR
2006
In recognition of National 4-H Week, ESRI has announced it will
offer a software grant program for U.S. 4-H clubs in 2006. Proposals
will be accepted from 4-H groups to conduct community mapping
projects using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and GPS (Global
Positioning Systems) technologies.
4-H members are preparing for 21st Century careers. Many of these
will be in geospatial technology -- identified by the U.S.
Department of Labor as one of the fastest growing job categories in
the U.S. Geospatial knowledge will be essential for success in
science, engineering and technology careers. Many traditional 4-H
programs are beginning to integrate geospatial knowledge, building a
strong foundation for future learning.
ESRI will award grants of GIS club software and learning resources
to U.S. 4-H groups whose community mapping project proposals are
approved. Since 2004, forty-four states have been awarded ESRI GIS
software grants for 4-H clubs to carry out community mapping
projects. These projects apply spatial technologies to natural
resource, agricultural and community awareness 4-H projects in both
rural and urban neighborhoods. 4-H GIS/GPS community mapping
projects have contributed to their community's understanding of
biodiversity, climate change, deforestation, environmental
pollution, food production, freshwater supply, health and disease,
mountain development, poverty reduction, rural development, tourism,
urbanization and other key issues. More about 4-H GIS/GPS projects
can be found on the Web at http://www.4-h.org/tech/gisgps
and http://www.tnstate.edu/iager/gisgps/main.htm.
Proposals for ESRI GIS software grants for U.S. 4-H will be accepted
from January 1 through March 30, 2006. Applicants will describe
their existing GIS/GPS programs and efforts, if any, and their plan
for using GIS in their local program for 2006. To register for
notification of the 4-H grant application and selection guidelines,
p lease register to receive an email notification from ESRI on 4-H
grant opportunities at http://www.esri.com/grants.
If you have a question about the ESRI GIS grants for 4-H, send an
email to 4-HGIS_external@esri.com or go to http://www.esri.com/4-H.

quality mentoring program. The free toolkit can be downloaded from
the MENTOR website. The new toolkit can help you, whether you are
new to mentoring or have been working with young people for many
years. It is designed to accompany MENTOR's Elements
of Effective Practice, or guidelines to ensure quality
mentoring. The Elements of Effective Practice has four components:
program design and planning; program management; program operations;

- 4-H and the Latino Community
Did
you know Latinos will make up half of the growth of our country during
the next two decades? This group comprises 14 percent of the US
population, or about 41 million people, and nearly 14 million are
under age of 18. The population is expected to reach more than 55
million by 2020.
4-H
is a diverse organization that welcomes youth of all cultures from all
parts of the country.
National
4-H Council is looking at ways to reach out to Latino communities in
our country through 4-H programs. We'd like to know if you're doing
any work with this community, and if so, if you could share with us
what you are doing.
Email
Gretchen Hilburger at ghilburger@fourhcouncil.edu
to share your work and ideas. ¡Muchas gracias!

Night With The Orlando Magic! February 4, 2006
4-H'ers are invited to purchase and sell
tickets to their families and friends at a discounted rate of $12
per ticket for the upper bowl and $32 per ticket for the lower
level. From each ticket sold by a 4-H member, $1 will go back to
that 4-H'ers county and $1 will go to the state 4-H office.
This will also serve as an exciting career exploration opportunity
as youth will have the chance to speak with a Magic executive as
well as participate in a number of exciting activities such as:
lay-ups, touring the arena, photos with the dancers, and more!
Check out the tentative
schedule and the poster.
The poster has a section to add/change your local group info...maybe
put in contact information for 'local sales.' Tickets
purchased at the same time will be placed in Block seating - please
try to do this so counties can sit together! We'd like all of
you to participate the best you can, and have a fantastic 4-H
showing on February 4! ~

E-mail Your News Tip
About Florida 4-H
Do you have a great idea
for a 4-H news story? Use our new online form to let us know! News
must be interesting, timely and accurate. Most 4-H news is what we
call "soft news," falling mainly in the human interest or feature
category. Unusual 4-H projects, programs, and community service
outreach activities are often great news stories. Maybe you know an
outstanding 4-H leader or 4-H club member with a unique 4-H story we
could profile. Sometimes a great news story is just about one person
who has overcome an obstacle through 4-H. If your news idea involves
an award, please note that we typically only distribute news releases
for state and national awards.
If you are not
sure if your idea is a news tip, please fill out the online form, and
we will contact you.
