Beef "Skills for Life" Project Series 

The Beef "Skills for Life" series will help youth practice the life skills of; decision making, communicating with others, leading self and others, planning and organizing, and learning to learn.  Youth will learn the following concepts related to their beef project; identify and select quality beef cattle, demonstrate good beef management and health practices, develop beef fitting and showing skills, improve their beef consumer skills, and promote beef products and the beef industry.

This project guide is for 4-H members ages 9-11 and is the first in the Beef "Skills for Life" series.  Bite into Beef will teach beef breeds, body parts, halter breaking, grooming, showmanship, feed ingredients, meat cuts, and beef by products.  There is a Leader/Helper Guide listed below.

This project guide is for 4-H members ages 12-14 and is the second in the Beef "Skills for Life" series.  Here's the Beef will teach evaluation of beef leg structure, beef judging and oral reasons, the digestive system, feed rations, livestock handling, parasites, ethics, carcass composition, yield grade, and cuts of meat. There is a Leader/Helper Guide listed below.

Beef 3 "Skills for Life" Leading the Charge

This project guide is for 4-H members ages 15-18 and is the third in the Beef "Skills for Life" series.  Leading the Charge will teach 4-H'ers how to determine frame scores, sire selection, Expected Progeny Differences (EPD's), Hay quality, nutrient requirements, feed labels, careers in the beef industry, diseases, reproductive systems, calving, and carcass evaluation. There is a Leader/Helper Guide listed below.

This leader's guide will help you support youth in his or her efforts to set goals and complete activities, as well as providing resources for the member's to use in completing the series.

This training aid will teach youth how to make a model calf that can be used to teach such skills as dehorning, administering medication and many more.  4-H members can make their realistic model calf with the provided pattern.
